Moana

It’s September, and I like to imagine knitters all over the world getting out their knitting needles and preparing for the cold days to come. So I finally published my Moana Shawlette pattern today! In June I ordered a yarn abonnement from www.kayalana.ch and the first yarn I received was a skein of Koigu Painter’s Palette Premium Merino and two skeins of Ito Sensai. The Koigu is fingering weight and the Ito is lace, but the colors looked so gorgeous together that I just had to come up with a design that used both of the yarns. I hope you like it as much as I do! 🙂

The pattern is available on Ravelry, Craftsy, Etsy and soon Loveknitting and Patternfish!

Moana – Maori for ocean – is a cute little shawlette perfect for using up the yarns left over from bigger projects. Use similar colors or contrasting ones, depending on the look you desire. The beginning section can be worked in any fingering weight yarn, from uni to highly variegated.

Instructions are charted as well as written!

Size: 94 cm (37”) wingspan, 51 cm (20”) deep

Gauge: 22 sts and 44 rows = 10 cm (4”) in garter stitch after blocking, using the fingering weight. I used the same needle size for the lace yarn.
(Gauge is not vital for this project, but it will affect the size of the FO and yardage.)

Materials:
Koigu Painter’s Palette Premium Merino (50 g (1.8 oz), 160 m (175 yd), 100 % merino), 1 hank #P601 (MC); Ito Sensai (20 g (0.71 oz), 240 m (262 yd), 60 % mohair, 40 % silk), 1 hank #302 Cinnamon (CA), 2 hanks #303 Cherry Blossom (CB)
Or approx. 180 m (200 yd) fingering yarn and 270 m (300 yd) laceweight yarn of CA and 400 m (440 yd) laceweight yarn of CB of your choice.
(Designer’s note: I used only one skein of MC and CA, but I had nothing left.)
3 mm (US 2.5) 80 cm (32”) circular needle, or a size that gives you a fabric you like.
(Designer’s note: I’m a loose knitter, so you may want to try bigger needles if you aren’t.)
2 stitch markers

Skills needed:
Garter tab (explained in the pattern)
Knit and purl, k-tbl
Lace knitting
Knitting on a border (explained in the pattern)
